Chiefs drive Laurent Duvernay-Tardif insane, accepts trade to NFL version of Siberia

Right before the NFL trade deadline, the Kansas City Chiefs ended up trading veteran offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif to the New York Jets.

For offensive guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, his playing days with the Kansas City Chiefs have officially come to a close. On Thursday, less than an hour before the NFL trade deadline, the Chiefs sent him to New York in exchange for tight end Dan Brown, per insider Tom Pelissero.

Duvernay-Tardic actually had a no-trade clause in his contract, but he has decided he’s had enough time in Kansas City and he’s ready for a new start of things with the 2-5 Jets.

The Laurent Duvernay-Tardif saves the Chiefs more than $1 million

Per FanSided’s Matt Verderame, this move by Kansas City saves Kansas City right around $1 million in cap space and cash, per his sources. Duvernay-Tardif didn’t appear in a game this season for Kansas City and he was active for the first time on Monday night going up against the Giants.

On the Chiefs’ side of the LDT trade, I’m told this saves about $1M in both cap space and cash, per source

In total, Duvernay-Tardif spent five full seasons with Kansas City from 2015-2019. Few people have forgotten about him sitting out the 2020 season to help fight the battle against the Coronavirus pandemic. This year, Duvernay-Tardif returned to the Chiefs, but he suffered a hand injury during training camp. Trey Smith went on to win the starting right guard job.

For the first seven games of the season, Duvernay-Tardif wasn’t active for the team’s contests. He finally put on his jersey for the Monday Night Football showdown with New York, but didn’t see the field.

With it clear that he wasn’t going to earn much playing time this season, Duvernay-Tardif gave the green light for the move to East Rutherford so he could try and get some more opportunities with the Jets. The right guard leaves Kansas City with a Super Bowl ring, as the team won it all back during the 2019 season.
