Combate America to host one-night, $100,000 Copa Combate tournament

Combate Americas will have eight, elite mixed martial artists enter ‘La Juala’  on Nov. 11 focusing on finishing three fights in one night and taking home $100,000.

Nearly 24 years ago, Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren, was the executive producer for UFC 1 back in November 1993. In the UFC’s first event Royce Gracie ran the gauntlet, defeating three opponents in one night and pocketing the $50,000 winner’s purse.

This November, McLaren and Combate Americas bring the winner-take-all tournament back into the limelight.

In a press release outlining Combate’s newest venture, McLaren voiced his excitement for this exciting one-night tournament.

“When I launched the UFC 24 years ago, we changed the world and, on November 11, we are going to do so again with a dynamic tournament that assembles a collection of fighters that most deserve to represent their respective countries. These fighters will put their national pride on the line with a substantial payoff.”

The participants vying for the inaugural ‘Copa’ will compete in the 135-pound bantamweight division.

Due to the gruelling nature of the tournament, officials have restructured the bout duration for the opening rounds.

The quarter-final and semi-final bouts will consist of three, 3-minute rounds while the final bout will follow the standard three, 5-minute rounds format. In addition to the four quarter-final bouts, there will also be two alternate bouts. The subsequent winners will be on standby in case of injury throughout the tournament. Elbows will also not be allowed during the opening two rounds.

Copa Combate will take place November 11 in Cancun, Mexico. Copa participants, alternates and broadcasting details will be officially released over the coming weeks. With a $100,000 grand prize for the sole survivor, the price to play is worth it for any Combate competitor looking to make his name in the world of MMA.
