Kansas City Chiefs reveal plan for playing Josh Gordon in Week 4

The Kansas City Chiefs have revealed its plan for Josh Gordon ahead of a Week 4 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Josh Gordon has landed in Kansas City, but we will have to wait to see whether or not he sticks.

After signing with the Chiefs earlier in the week, Gordon was placed on the team’s practice squad with the intention of being activated to the 53-man roster at some point.

That point has not arrived, which shouldn’t be all that surprising.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Chiefs are expected to activate Gordon ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Bills.

“New Chiefs receiver Josh Gordon made quite an impression in his first week at his new job,” Rapoport reported on Sunday morning. “So much so that Gordon may be promoted to the active roster next week, sources say.”

This means Gordon will not be with the Chiefs as they battle the Eagles this week. This outcome, however, was to be expected as the timeline to getting Gordon up to speed with one of the NFL’s most intense offensive schemes was far shorter than even the quickest player needs.

When is Josh Gordon playing for the Kansas City Chiefs?

Having Gordon learn the Chiefs playbook well enough to be impactful for Week 4 was always a long shot. Signing Gordon was more than just a one week fix, however, as Kansas City is adding him to be a potential threat in the long haul.

Think of this much in the same way the Buccaneers did when Rob Gronkowski was signed last season. No one expected vintage Gronk to show up from the jump, nor was the expectation that he play with his dials cranked up to 11 for the entire season. Gronkowski was almost an afterthought for most of the season last year, but he showed up in big spots during the playoffs and the in the Super Bowl; that’s why Tampa Bay signed him and that’s the same way Chiefs fans should look at the signing of Gordon.

He may not be involved this week, but if Gordon pays off down the road in meaningful ways, it won’t matter when he made his debut so long as the result factors into more Lombardi hardware.
