NFL power rankings, Week 14: Lions win (not a typo)

While most of the teams near the top of the NFL Power Rankings didn’t change this week, there was still plenty of movement with the start of December.

Another week in NFL 2021 and once again, there were plenty of nail biters and teams coming away with last-second wins. Of course, arguably the biggest game when it comes to this first week of December takes place at Orchard Park on Monday night. In the meantime, the NFL Power Ranking continue to shift as more than one club has bounced back from a rough start.

Houston Texans 2-10

Last week: L, 31-0 vs IND
Last rank: 32nd

David Culley’s team was at home and looked to avoid a sweep at the hands of the rival Colts. But for the second time this season, the Texans failed to put a point on the scoreboard.

Veteran Tyrod Taylor hit on just five of his 13 pass attempts for 45 yards, was picked off once and was sat down in favor of rookie Davis Mills and he didn’t fare much better (6-of-14 for 49 yards). The Texans totaled only 141 yards and surrendered 389 to the Colts’ offense.

New York Jets 3-9

Last week: L, 33-18 vs PHI
Last rank: 29th

The team got rookie quarterback Zach Wilson back last Sunday and the Jets came back to beat the Texans. Now Robert Saleh’s club welcomed the Eagles to MetLife Stadium.

Wilson finished with 226 yards and two scores through the air and ran for another touchdown but the club owned just a 12-7 lead after one quarter thanks to a pair of missed PATs. But New York’s defense had few answers for Eagles’ backup quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Jacksonville Jaguars 2-10

Last week: L, 37-7 at LAR
Last rank: 30th

Urban Meyer’s club has made strides this year. But the Jaguars took a three-game losing streak to Los Angeles to face a Rams’ team that has also dropped its last three contests. However, Jacksonville’s defense was overwhelmed on Sunday as the team gave up points in each quarter and surrendered 418 total yards.

Rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence was sacked twice and threw for only 145 yards as the Jaguars’ attack was limited to 197 total yards.

Detroit Lions 1-10-1

Last week: W, 29-27 vs MIN
Last rank: 31st

Earlier this season (Week 5), Dan Campbell’s club lost at the gun at Minnesota. Now the team looked to end an eight-game losing streak to the Vikings. And the Detroit defense came up big in the first half as the club owned a 20-6 after two quarters.

But the Lions were down 27-23 with 1:50 to play. However, Jared Goff marched his team downfield and found rookie wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for an 11-yard score on the final play of the game.
