Steelers: Could Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement be in their own backyard?

Steelers: Could Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement be in their own backyard?

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to look for Ben Roethlisberger’s replacement now more than ever. What if he’s been right under their nose this whole time?

The Steelers share a facility with the Pitt Panthers, quite literally. The Panthers play their home games at Heinz Field by design. Despite the sparse crowds, Pitt uses this as a recruiting pitch. Want to be a pro? Why not train with them?

To suggest Roethlisberger and Pickett are close friends would be a lie. There aren’t many similarities between the two, other than the fact that both are quarterbacks in the city of Pittsburgh.

Still, though, with Pickett lighting up ACC defenses and Roethlisberger heading to retirement sooner rather than later, perhaps the Steelers ought to start paying a little more attention to the 23-year-old from New Jersey.

Steelers: Kenny Pickett rising up NFL Draft boards

Pickett returned for his final year of eligibility on the advice of Peyton Manning, who made a few calls around the league and discovered Pickett’s draft grade left a lot to be desired. Had Pickett gone pro last year, he would’ve likely been selected in the fourth or fifth rounds, at best.

Assuming he continues his hot start to the season — we’re talking 15 touchdowns to only one interception — he could rise into the high Day 2 category at worst.

Pickett has a high-profile QB body, along with the arm strength to boot. He’s used to playing in all kinds of weather because, well, he’s been in Pittsburgh. He knows what it takes to contend in this city.

Per most accounts, the 2022 QB class leaves a lot to be desired. The Steelers would have plenty of competition for a high-upside player like Pickett, especially if he continues to impress against Power-5 competition.

The Steelers have had an up-close look at Pickett for four years. It’s time persistence pays off.
