Tua Tagovailoa going on IR could not come at a worse time for Dolphins QB

The Miami Dolphins place starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the injured reserve list.

After the Miami Dolphins ruled him out for Week 3’s road game vs. the Las Vegas Raiders, they have now placed starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the injured reserve list with fractured ribs.

Going on IR this season means a player will be ruled out for only three games. While Tagovailoa should be healthy enough to return to the Dolphins lineup around Halloween, this could not be coming at a worse time for him and the Miami organization. It is a combination of Jacoby Brissett being solid, the Dolphins facing tough competition and Tagovailoa being undeniably injury-prone.

It is never a good time to get hurt, but this early-season blow could be catastrophic for Tagovailoa.

Sources: The #Dolphins are placing QB Tua Tagovailoa on Injured Reserve, meaning he’ll miss three games. The hope is he returns from his broken ribs at that point. But it’s Jacoby Brissett’s show for the next three games.

Tua Tagovailoa injury update: Dolphins quarterback placed on injured reserve

When it comes to Brissett, he is arguably one of the very best backups in the NFL. He is more than capable of spot-starting, having had great success in that role previously with the New England Patriots and the Indianapolis Colts. Frankly, the separation between him at this stage of his career and what Tagovailoa provides in his second year out of Alabama is not as vast as one would think.

As for who Miami has to play over the next three weeks, they are at the Raiders in Week 3, home vs. the Colts in Week 4 and at the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5. Miami is probably going 1-2, or even 0-3 in those games. That would put the Dolphins at 2-3 or 1-4 by the time Tagovailoa comes off Injured Reserve. It could be season over by then.

Lastly, Tagovailoa is doing a poor job of being anything but the next Sam Bradford. They throw a beautiful ball, but cannot stay healthy for the life of them. If that is what Tagovailoa is to become, then Miami must accept that he is not the answer under center. If Brissett gives them a better chance to win, then general manager Chris Grier really screwed up taking him over Justin Herbert.

While Tagovailoa recovers from his broken ribs, it is hard seeing it working out for him in Miami.
